Video – FLUX: Redefining Women’s Surfing

FLUX: Redefining Women’s Surfing is a short film I assisted with (and am also in with young ripper Kahanu Delovio) alongside a talented crew of filmmakers, Sarah Lee, Chad King and Mia Montanile, from Chapman University for Project W.

From the filmmakers: “FLUX is a powerful essay documentary that reveals sexism in the surfing industry. As talent becomes an accessory to beauty, the sexualization of women in surf media creates damaging effects for women surfers everywhere. Featuring the voices of female surf icons both past and present, FLUX will empower audiences with its call for change and hope for the future.”

Aloha from Maui, this is brilliant, Cori I am so glad to see this..Word needs to get out, as I watched the provocative body shots, I thought, why aren’t the Men’s bodies shot this way. Wouldn’t that look different ! Alas Men are not objectified as Women are.
Keep up the good works. I am sharing this with friends….
I met you at Ku’au Inn, Paia Maui when you stayed in 2012

  3. Hi,
My feeling is that the media is not the only one responsible for the objectification of women and girls!
Human nature as a subset of all living things is also to some degree responsible and genetically there is often sexual attraction between the biological genders and because of that, the sexual zones become the focus of individuals when seen by each other, and in the modern society these zones need to be appropriately covered as so to diminish undue interest of the viewers!
And so the women and girls often get caught up in intentionally displaying a certain part of their erogenous zones to attract others and their viewers note that and place more of their attention on both women and girls because of that!
The rules of modesty have changed over the years and almost everyone has had some role in either expanding or restricting the common social (moral and legal) rules of dress!
It amazes me to see women and girls criticizing the focus of viewers including the media on their bodies while at the same time going to great lengths to make themselves as physically attractive and desirable as possible while publically engaged in the activities of work and play!
In the case of surfing, people, if you want the public to focus on your surfing performance or better yet, leave you alone to pursue the joy and fulfillment of your interacting with the natural elements of the waves and ocean, I recommend that you wear less revealing swim wear and no makeup when you are out there enjoying your interactions with one of nature’s most powerfull forces!
That way, instead of continuing to be objects of desire, you will just be other players interacting with Earth’s natural forces and if you decide to participate in the competition between the player, your skills and talent as surfers will be the only things that will be considered by the judges!
Other than the somewhat misplacement of focus on who or what is responsible for the distracting objectification of women/girls in surfing,…Mia, Chad, and Sarah made an excellent film that was well shot with players who were and are excellent representatives of the art and the sport!
I used to bellyboard off Devereaux Point, north of Isla Vista/Goleta/Santa Barbara/California everyday back in the mid 1960s, and bodysurf/raftsurf near P.O.P. in Santa Monica in earlier years!
Keep up the interest in redefining women’s surfing and make sure that more people see this great film!
    Thank you, very much.
